Today’s reality includes significant pressure, an information overload and constant distractions from all aspects of modern life – often leading to a sense of overwhelm.

What is Mindfulness?

Sitting Mindfulness PoseMindfulness is paying attention in the present moment – to each moment and all that it has to offer. All of us are already mindful to some degree in our lives. For example, stopping to look at a beautiful sunset; looking into the eyes of a loved one; watching animals or our pets playing and being fully present with exactly what is happening, moment by moment. Even professional sports players could be considered mindful when fully focusing their attention in each moment in what they call “the zone”.

The opposite of being mindful is being mindless or unaware, which many of us identify with as being on “autopilot”. Have you ever driven home from work, only to realize you don’t remember how you got there? Or passed countless time on social media, scrolling endlessly? Next time you’re in the bus, train, or waiting in line – look around and see how many people are mindlessly using their phones instead of being present with what’s happening around them.

Through mindfulness training we can further develop our capacity for mindfulness, enabling us to fully experience and truly live every moment. We all have this innate capacity to live and not just do. We are, after all, human beings and not human doings.
